Soldier X

    (Marvel, 2002-2003)
™ and ©2002 Marvel Characters, Inc.

As a part of its X-title renaissance, Marvel cancelled Cable and relaunched the title as Soldier X. This is an interesting spin on the title character, because Cable, aka Nathan Summers, is a soldier without a war to fight. Summers had come from the future to keep the mutant hysteria of the present from creating the dystopia he knew; but with the tyrant who had been the agent behind that future defeated, Summers is looking for a purpose for his life. He’d like to find peace, but he finds himself falling back into the life of a soldier. Of course, that’s all he’s ever known, and Blaquesmith, his friend and mentor from the future, takes advantage of that aspect of Summers’ personality by pushing him into conflicts that he is reluctant to involve himself in. Soldier X is a reflective title; it becomes a commentary on modern society as Summers soldiers on.
