Just When You Thought Things Couldn’t Get Worse
(Fantagraphics, 2007)
™ and © Fantagraphics Books, Inc.
From the Publisher:
Edward Sorel’s paintings and illustrations have adorned the covers and pages of The New Yorker, The Atlantic, Time, Rolling Stone, Esquire, and many other magazines. But, when he wasn’t painting covers and illustrating articles for the most prominent magazines in America, he was indulging in his first love — making comic strips.
Just When You Thought Things Couldn’t Get Worse collects Sorel’s best comics written and drawn over the last 30 years from the pages of politically charged magazines such as The Nation and the Village Voice. Sorel’s subject matter ranges from the cynical machinations of our political and religious classes to social and cultural commentary to reportage to autobiographical musings. Their outrage is leavened by an underlying disbelief in and a bemused revulsion at the stupidities and hypocrisies that he bears witness to. Nonethless, no target escapes his watchful and excoriating gaze: politicians, theological dynasties, ideologues left and right, lawyers, and the usual gang of movers and shakers — panderers, philistines, and money-grubbers. (Nor does he exclude himself from his own criticism.)
Also included are a selection of equally trenchant single panel gags and several illustrated essays, all drawn with Sorel’s trademark elegance, a caligraphic pen and ink technique that calls to mind the cartooning masters of the previous two centuries.
