Spider-Man Fairy Tales
(Marvel, 2007)
™ and © 2007 Marvel Characters, Inc.
Following in the footsteps of 2006’s X-Men Fairy Tales, Spider-Man Fairy Tales mixes classic elements of the Spider-Man saga with even more classic folklore to produce something that falls in between the two. Often, the formula finds comics characters cast in the role of fairy tale folk, but the story that results is quite a departure from either original source. For instance, the first issue of Spider-Man Fairy Tales roughly adapts “Little Red Riding Hood” with Mary Jane in the title role, but because of the need to fit other Spider-Man characters in the story (such as Spider-Man himself), the resulting comic does not wholly resemble the original tale. Still, this is a fun series, and is aptly written and illustrated to capture the sense of wonder that comes from both early, more innocent Spider-Man stories and the folktales told to all of us as children.
— Eric Garneau
