Johnny Repeat stars an eight-year-old boy (named, of course, Johnny) who knows everything past, present, and future, as well as Johnny’s team of misfits: a pop-culture-saavy sexaholic, an immortal woman who was the love of Voltaire’s life, and a dragonslayer who knows but one word of English (it’s the f-bomb). This book is indeed very strange, but it seems that this is the point—the afterword at the end of the graphic novel notes that a reader needs to look at the “big picture,” which is a little easier than taking this book on an event-by-event basis, especially as it’s told in a non-linear style. However, when taken as an impression more than a story, this book is a lot of fun; it mixes action like the kind seen in the Matrix films with cosmic storytelling not unfamiliar to fans of more far-out superhero comics. The author bio states that Johnny Repeat is merely the first book in a seven-book saga, so it seems that an epic story is waiting in the wings to unfold—thus far, we have gotten only a taste.
