The Aviary
(AdHouse, 2007)
™ and © AdHouse
Jamie Tanner gives us a bizarre world which effortlessly mixes the antique with the modern, all in an exquisite art style reminiscent of Edwardian newspapers and advertisements. A strange corporation manufactures a bird-man doll, a doll that seems to somehow run into a variety of lost and depressed characters searching for love, and even occasionally convinces them to take steps that they otherwise wouldn't have considered. A masked man hires a prostitute to sleep for him, giving him the opportunity to watch her at peace, much like how he watched over his dying wife in her final days; a monkey commissions original artwork to fill his gallery of erotica, oblivious to the pain he’s causing for some of the artists; a zombie becomes the star of a reality television show, one which asks viewers to guess which body part will be the next to fall off. All of these odd and sad characters meet the bird-man doll in turn, and often bump into each other, as they drift through their sepia-tone world.
