Mantlo: A Life in Comics
(Sleeping Giant, 2007)
™ and © Sleeping Giant
From the Publisher:
If you grew up reading Marvel Comics during the 1970s and 90s, then chances are you read dozens if not hundreds of comics authored Bill Mantlo. From an early start in Marvel’s coloring department. Mantlo quickly rose to prominence as a writer, creating characters such as The White Tiger (the first Hispanic super–hero). Mantlo honed his writing skills throughout the 1970s on a variety of titles including Marvel Team-Up, Human Fly, Super-Villain Team-Up, The Champions, Iron Man, and Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man. Toward the end of the 1970s he developed the wildly popular and Eagle Award–winning series, Micronauts (based on the Mego toys). Mantlo also penned more than 70 issues of one of Marvel’s flagship properties, The Incredible Hulk, and transformed a less–than–stellar toy (ROM: Spaceknight) into an exciting 75–issue science–fiction comic book series reminiscent of 1950s sci–fi/horror films. He also created the popular teen vigilante duo, Cloak and Daggar. A prolific author, Mantlo entered law school while still writing for Marvel. He passed the bar exam and became a successful public defender in New York. Several years later, Mantlo sufferred irreparable brain damage upon being struck by a fast–moving car. Bill has required full–time nursing care ever since.
Mantlo: A Life in Comics is a celebration of Bill’s life and work. Part retrospective, part tribute, the project traces Bill’s career and features comments and insights by many of his collaborators–such as Tony Isabella, Mike Mignola, Gerorge Pérez, Ed Hannigan, and Jackson Guice–as well as first–hand recollections by members of the Mantlo family, including Bill’s brother Mike, who also penned the introduction.
