The Weapon

Thomas Zhou is a young physics genius who’s just invented “the weapon of the future,” a laser resonator system that generates coherent holograms—in other words, this weapon can become whatever the bearer programs it to be. To sell this invention, Zhou fabricates a story, inspired by the Chinese legends his grandfather used to tell him, about an order of monks called the Shan-Tao, who could master their life force to such a degree that they could make physical manifestations of it in weapon form—much like Zhou’s own invention. However, after a series of attacks on Zhou by seemingly random bystanders who shout “Death to the sons of Shan-Tao!” it’s not so clear that Zhou’s sales pitch is merely the stuff of legends. Now Zhou and his chief investor, Megan Dean-Hughes, have to investigate these strange attacks—but are a young inventor and a rich investor any match for evil ninja clans and the like?
