Living Statues

Writer/artist Emily Blair won a Xeric Award grant with a disenchanted art professor. Weary of his intellectual and aesthetic inferiors overrunning the Italian city of Florence, which he greatly esteems for its artistic treasures, John Martin is rankled by a performance artist who perfectly resembles Michelangelo’s David. The young man becomes the medium by which Martin comes to appreciate the everyday art of the world, and the beauty of people enjoying life, bridging the gulf between Martin and his lone confidante, Alice Ryan. Blair’s use of curves belies her woodcut-style art, with expressive faces that immediately seem familiar.
