Peter Porkchops

DC was the preeminent publisher of super-hero comics from the 1940s, but when super-heroes went out of favor toward the end of the decade, they had to cast around in the unfamiliar territory of funny animal comics, among other genres, to maintain their readership. Some of their efforts, like Fox and the Crow, were quite successful. Then there were books like Peter Porkchops, an uncomfortable hodgepodge of Porky Pig and Donald Duck that pitted the cagey pig Peter Porkchops against hapless rival Wolfie Wolf. It’s hard to imagine that kids would buy Peter Porkchops if their same dime would buy them Uncle Scrooge or Bugs Bunny, but enough people bought it to keep it going for ten years. Sandwiched between the predictable antics of Peter and Wolfie in some issues were a few pages of Dizzy Dog by Sheldon Mayer, DC’s only genuinely funny artist at the time.
