Dust (Paolo Parente’s…)

Paolo Parente’s Dust is based on a strategy board game of the same name, not dissimilar from Axis & Allies (it even takes places circa World War II) but set in an alternate history where the Axis have uncovered a secret weapon—a crashed alien vessel. Using technology garnered from this vessel, the Axis have become nigh-unstoppable, but the combined forces of the Allies and the Sino-Soviet Union still give it their best shot.

Dust is kind of a mash-up of the science-fiction and war genres, with even a little horror thrown in (among the Axis’ weapons are genetically engineered intelligent apes and reanimated zombie soldiers), and there’s a lot to look at and take in—one can easily see, reading this comic, its basis as an action-packed board game. In addition, Parente’s art is wonderful, and somehow makes a world in which soldiers battling intelligent apes in giant mech suits aesthetically appealing.
