Although in the world of comics it is DC’s 52 that has led to a resurgence in popularity for the character of Isis, Bluewater Comics’ The Legend of Isis plays more off of the 1970s Filmation TV series The Secrets of Isis.

However, The Legend of Isis is not a direct sequel; it removes the high school drama aspects of the television show and instead emphasizes the mythical aspects of Isis a lot more, especially in regards to her relationship to the rest of the Egyptian pantheon. In just the first issue of this series, Isis fights Egyptian demon Apophis and makes several mentions of seeing her beloved Osiris again—clearly, this is a series steeped heavily in mythology.

Writer Derek Ruiz gives his script a dramatic tone that lets it read like a movie (or perhaps, a television show?) and artist Dawid Strauss’ pencils, similar in style to artists like Humberto Ramos, do an excellent job of conveying the fast-action nature of the script.
