The Marvel Tarot

An extensive, even exhaustive look at the world of magic in the Marvel Universe, The Marvel Tarot represents an effort by sorcerer Ian McNee to examine all aspects of magic as it operates in Marvel Comics. To do this, McNee consults the deck of the First Tarot, magical cards which, in theory, lay out the whole of existence to those able to read them. The cards, however, behave strangely, some even changing their image from one viewing to the next. At first McNee believes the deck to be broken, but after close study he realizes the truth: it is not the cards that are broken, but magic itself.

The Marvel Tarot is absolutely essential reading for anyone interested in the mystic aspects of the Marvel Universe, and the book is lent a lot of clout by writer/designer David Sexton, an actual Tarot artist. Although the groundwork laid out in this book has immediate bearing on Marvel’s Mystic Arcana mini-series (featuring Magik, Black Knight, the Scarlet Witch, and Sister Grimm, representative of the four elemental forces), this comic’s scope is nothing less than the backbone of the entire Marvel world.
