JD is 12 years old and lives with his grandfather Grifford, a retired magician working as a fantasy-world small town’s grave keeper. JD is learning the spells to succeed Grandpa, when monster “puppets” from the outside world attack them. Grifford is killed before he can tell JD more than to leave the only home he has ever known and go to the Fourth World to learn his true heritage. When he does so, he’s pursued by the sadistic bounty hunter Du Mascara. Meanwhile, the Under-6 Squad, a police force of wizards tracking Du Mascara, reveal through dialogue that they are also hunting “the evil magician Grifford” and “the child the evil magician created with his Recast spell.”

Recast is a pleasant but unexceptional manga (technically manhwa, since it’s Korean) young-teen fantasy adventure. JD and the reader don’t know why he is being attacked—can he keep ahead of the mysterious villains until he finds out? Lotsa action and well-drawn art.
