Created for United Features Syndicate by Larry Whittington and later taken over by Ernie Bushmiller, Fritzi Ritz was a typical daily newspaper strip about a beautiful, curvaceous 1920s style flapper. Stories followed Fritzi’s romantic adventures and situations she encountered as a free spirited, independent woman of that era. Fritzi had many suitors and led quite an exciting life that included late night parties, cigarette smoking, brief romances and fleeting marriage proposals. Bushmiller had a keen eye drawing beautiful women and using a bold, clear art style, delighted readers with visual puns. His ability to construct a gag appealed to a very broad audience and raised the strip to new heights of popularity. In the early thirties, Bushmiller introduced Fritzi’s bushy-haired 7-year old niece Nancy into the series. The strip was renamed after this wildly popular character by 1938.
