When Richard Starkings first began work on his character Hip Flask and the dark, dystopian world the half-hippo lives in, he was able to ask top artists for help fleshing out his vision, and a number contributed short stories or pinups. As the Hip Flask story gelled into a definitive whole, some of these contributions turned out to be a little off from the direction of the final story-line, and have not been included in the comic series. But they are not to be forgotten, and are finally collected into the Elephantmen: Pilot issue. Like the pilot for a television show, this book is the early drafts of Hip Flask, a test run, if you will, full of a slightly different kind of action for the hippo detective than found in the regular comic book.
