The Shade

    (DC, 1997)
™ and ©1997 DC Comics, Inc.

This mini-series was prompted from the Shade’s appearances in DC Comics’ latest Starman series, although he was originally a villain of the Golden Age Flash. The Shade can wield a mysterious, tangible, shadow energy and has lived for hundreds of years, although no explanation for his long life is offered. His longevity is made even more remarkable given the fact that an entire family—the Ludlows—has taken a vow to kill him in retaliation for his slaughter of their ancestors.

A significant component of this mini-series is the presence of a two-page text piece titled, “From The Shade’s Journal” which features the introspective musings and justifications of a man who has lived hundreds of years. The Shade, written by James Robinson (Starman, The Golden Age) features art by such preeminent pencilers as Gene Ha and Michael Zulli.
