Dirty Plotte

Dirty Plotte was created in 1990 by Julie Doucet and partially sponsored by a grant from Quebec’s Ministry of Culture. It’s one of the more bleak alternative comics out there, calling to mind the sort of comic a female R. Crumb might make. Freud would have a field day here.

Typical of its sequences are “A Day in the Julie Doucet’s Life;” wherein Julie spends 42 panels swearing at her alarm clock, mumbling incoherently at her refrigerator, zoning out at the kitchen table, laughing maniacally at a spoon, etc. This is followed by a strangely disturbing dream story involving spaceships, mom, cookies, and solo sex acts.

A running series in this title is “Monkey and the Living Dead,” in which a black, balloon-faced woman naively lives out life in a mean world filled with drooling men, go-go dancers, and assorted acts of depravity.
