Diverse art unified only by its high quality and brilliant colors with quality characterization and fluid dialogue. Yes, Cthulu Tales: Tainted has it all, if only the tales didn’t end so abruptly, and not in gasp-inducing, horrifying manner. More tongue-in-cheek, these tales are still thoughtful, and can produce terror, though it doesn’t seem to come from Cthulu, whose primary characteristic is its unknowable, indescribable alien nature, too vast to be comprehended by mortals. This book almost solidly renders Cthulu & Co. as familiar and accessible in trying to show their power. Perhaps containing primal dread on the comic page is like giving a hurricane a personality.
