Potter’s Field

    (Boom!, 2007)
™ and © 2007 Mark Waid

Now here’s an interesting concept. Hart’s Field, New York’s final resting place for the nameless dead, has its own guardian angel in the form of John Doe. Doe is tough and relentless in discovering the identities of the deceased, and if they were murdered, solving the mystery of their deaths. He enlists a network of agents, à la the Shadow, to assist his endeavors with research, access, consultancy, etc. Paul Azaceta’s art is direct and firm, good anatomy and lighting, emotional use of shadows. With Nick Filardi’s palette, the book makes the face of an early ‘90s title from the prolific spate of independent publishers. It’s bitter stuff, but like all Mark Waid stories, brilliantly tight with a quality payoff.
