Tales Calculated to Drive You Bats
(Archie, 1961-1962, 1966)
™ and ©1962 Archie Publications
Imagine the gallows wit of Charles Addams filtered through the comic style and sensibility of Archie. That’s Tales Calculated to Drive You Bats, a true “humor in a jugular vein” offering from Archie Comics in the early 1960s. Campy, funny, and fun, Tales Calculated to Drive You Bats offers up goofy takes on familiar movie monsters such as Dracula, the Wolf-Man and the Mummy. One-to four-page stories keep the gags moving at a frantic clip, and if Archie humor tickles your funny bone, then Tales Calculated to Drive You Bats will certainly appeal. Strangely enough, Tales Calculated to Drive You Bats didn’t make much of an impression on the newsstands and vanished unable to capitalize on the “funny ha-ha/funny-strange” formula that propelled early 1960s TV series like The Munsters and The Addams Family to nationwide popularity.
