Tommy and the Monsters
(New Comics Group, 1989)
™ and ©1989 W. Jacobs & G. Jones
“Dumb games can get you killed.” “Self-pity can get you killed.” “Sentiment can get you killed.” These are the undeviating admonitions that Tommy receives from his single-minded, granite-jawed buddy, Space Cargo, who is resolute in his no-nonsense mission to destroy the Martians. Most people have become accustomed to the giant insects and brain parasites since the Martians invaded thirty years ago, but not Space Cargo! His single-minded sense of purpose is an inspiration to Tommy, whose non-stop narration is in stark contrast to Cargo’s stoicism.
Written with tongue planted firmly in cheek by Will Jacobs and Gerald Jones of The Trouble with Girls, this humor title relies on the sheer absurdity of the situation and the title character’s casual acceptance of that absurdity.
