The Life of Pope John Paul II

    (Marvel, 1983)
™ and ©1982 Marvel Entertainment Group

Marvel commissioned this title 1981, putting the life story of the then-new Pope into comics form, from his birth in Poland to the attempt on his life while Pope. Father Mieczyslaw Malinski, a lifelong friend of the first non-Italian pope, collaborated with Marvel artists and writers on this project.

The book gives us insight to this popular Pope’s younger days in Poland, when he narrowly escaped being placed in a concentration camp for his pro-Resistance views by studying for the priesthood. We also learn that he wrote poetry and could easily have aspired to a career as an actor, had he not responded to the spirituality that led him to give his life and talents to the church and the world.
