I Killed Adolf Hitler
(Fantagraphics, 2007)
™ and © Fantagraphics Books, Inc.
In the anthropomorphized animal world of Jason’s graphic novel I Killed Adolf Hitler, being a hitman is a perfectly legal profession. Our nameless main character is among those who have chosen this job, and after a few hundred kills, he becomes beset with an existential crisis about his chosen line of work. Then he gets an offer he can’t refuse: a scientist says he’s built a time machine, and is hiring our hero for a kill that will pay enough to let him quit forever—he just has to murder Adolph Hitler. Unfortunately, things in the past don’t go as planned, and Hitler ends up returning to the present day in the time machine, leaving our main character stranded in history. But our aged hero returns to intercept Hitler’s time machine, putting an end to the Fuehrer’s life for good, or so he thinks.
I Killed Adolf Hitler is a quick and engaging read, and although the premise may seem a little bizarre, the story truly explores good emotional and philosophical territory.
— Eric Garneau
