Prime Cuts (Mike Deodato’s…)

    (Caliber, 1996)
™ and ©1996 Mike Deodato and the Deodato Studio

Mike Deodato has become a rising star in the American comics scene over the years, but some of his finest work had previously appeared only in Brazil. Caliber launched a series of reprint titles to rectify this problem, including Ramthar, Protheus, and Fallout 3000. Prime Cuts was the fourth title in this collection, concentrating on Deodato’s work in the realm of horror.

Prime Cuts starts off with “Jack,” a particularly ghoulish turn on the Whitechapel murders of Jack the Ripper. This is followed up by “Lycanthropos,” a classic werewolf tale married to a detective story, set in Deodato’s native Brazil. Finally comes “Djinn,” a short but extremely effective piece about a massacre in the Middle East and a woman who takes divine retribution into her own hands.
