Otto Porfiri: Drama on the Cliff

You have to credit Dark Horse for its continued interest in publishing European comics after fans didn’t embrace its great Bonelli line. Unfortunately, compared to Dylan Dog, Otto Porfiri isn’t much of a protagonist. From his checkered sweater and bow tie to the feather in his hat, he’s the absolute antithesis of the hard-boiled detective.

This sullen, soft-boiled sleuth is game enough, but he mostly fumbles his way through a series of adventures that are redolent with such spicy pulp essentials as girls in bondage and devil cults. You’d think that would at least make the stories interesting, but, instead of crackling, they plod. Otto Porfiri does feature eye-catching art by Franco Saudelli, but the character seems to exist as an excuse to see pretty girls without their clothes. All things being equal, couldn’t Dark Horse try to get the rights to Blake & Mortimer or Spirou, instead?
