John Steele, Secret Agent

Dell/Gold Key Publications, the unchallenged king of licensed-property comics from the 1940s to the 1970s, must have somehow missed the boat on the biggest media sensation of the early sixties, James Bond. As a result, Gold Key had its gang of solid comic pros crank out John Steele, Secret Agent, featuring the adventures of two-fisted international man of mystery John Steele. Every panel of John Steele appears to have been traced from a frame of Dr. No and the resemblance between the main character and actor Sean Connery is so pronounced you can practically hear the dialogue being read with a Scots accent. Steele does credit to his source material, however, with well-written adventures and an uncommonly hip and energetic look the usually-static Gold Key house art style.
