The premise of Proof is two-fold: that supernatural creatures (“cryptids”) exist, and that one of them works for the federal government. The star of this book is Agent John Prufrock, or “Proof,” more commonly known as Bigfoot. Fortunately for us, Proof really likes humans, and works with a group of them employed by the US and Canadian governments at a covert base called the Lodge. The employees of the Lodge routinely investigate and track down cryptid sightings, with a specialty in dealing with those few cryptids who feel the need to prey on the human race.

Writer Alexander Grecian and artist Riley Rossmo have created a fascinating world for their characters to live in here, and tell their story with the flow of a Hollywood movie, making Proof a difficult book to put down. And this book proves to be of interest sociologically as well: although Grecian openly admits in the back of the first issue that he is skeptical about the existence of the creatures that populate his comic, he fills his story with “Cryptoids” (think “Flash Facts”) that connect his fiction to real-world phenomena, and he even gives real experts in supernatural phenomena a column at the back of his book. This makes Proof not only a fun comic story, but also an interesting read intellectually.
