Spider-Man Magazine: Great Power

    (Marvel, 2007)

Marvel’s Spider-Man Magazine is an oversized, all-ages affair aimed primarily at bringing young readers into the world of Marvel Comics—that’s why it features reprints of stories from Marvel’s “Marvel Adventure” line (Marvel Adventures: Spider-Man, Marvel Adventures: Iron Man, and Marvel Adventures: Avengers), books which are designed to be low on continuity and offensive content, so younger folk familiar with the characters more from video games or movies than decades of comics history can have an enjoyable read. Beyond these accessible stories, the magazine also features activities like coloring pages, a maze, and a word find, a prose story featuring super-heroes, and pin-ups that readers can tear out and stick on their wall to appreciate Marvel’s characters in all their colorful glory. Although some older readers and continuity hounds may balk at the way the Marvel Adventures tales wantonly retell origin stories like Iron Man’s or Venom’s, one cannot deny that a big, colorful, and fun book like this is a great way to introduce younger readers to the magic of comics as longtime fans know them.
