The third entry in B. Clay Moore and Scott Chantler’s Hawaiian Dick series (following Byrd of Paradise and The Last Resort), Screaming Black Thunder continues the adventures of Byrd, a police officer from the contiguous 48 states who’s set up shop in a noir-ish 1950s Honolulu. Byrd works as a private investigator, and, together with his attractive native secretary Kahami and his local law partner Mo Kalama, solves cases that mix in elements both of traditional crime drama and of the supernatural. In the latest installment, Byrd hooks up with a group of fighter pilots from World War II he idolized—the titular Screaming Black Thunder—as they pursue what squadron leader Dennis Tigher calls the “giant prize” left over from the war—Hitler. But now a mysterious Japanese plane that should have been decommissioned is taking potshots at the Black Thunder, and Byrd wants to know why. He also wants to know what Hitler, who should be 10 years dead, has to do with anything.

When it comes to writing detective narratives, B. Clay Moore is no stranger; the characters and situations he establishes are quick to draw one in, making this Hawaiian Dick miniseries, like the others, an engaging read.
