Nemi is a popular Norwegian comic strip (according to Wikipedia, it is second in the nation only to a strip called Pondus) created in 1997 by Lise Myhre; 10 years later it is receiving its first collection, and in the English language, via Titan Books. Nemi stars goth girl Nemi Montoya (whom Myhre states in an interview at the end of issue zero is named after Princess Bride character Inigo Montoya—this is a good indication of Myhre’s favored type of humor), and, like most comic strips, places her in day-to-day settings in order for her and/or her author to comment on the modern world. In this particular strip, many of the punchlines come from Nemi’s firm placement in Goth culture—she has no tolerance for popular people, the modern world of fast-paced business, or things that are cute; she enjoys monsters, movies, and making scenes. But despite starring a character whose culture is traditionally associated with black, the strip is drawn and colored lightly, and this juxtaposition makes Nemi a rather lighthearted and joyful read, lending it the potential for broad appeal not just in Norway but perhaps, thanks to Titan Books, in English-speaking countries as well.
