Ariane & Bluebeard
(Eclipse, 1989)
™ and © 1989 P. Craig Russell
The lovely Ariane, far from home and family, is to be the sixth bride of the powerful and menacing Bluebeard. Though she knows the danger (it is said the other wives are all dead by his hand), she feels it is her destiny, and hers alone, to expose the secrets locked within his sinister castle. Steeling her resolve, she begins her quest in a daring act of defiance. Ignoring Bluebeard’s harsh command, rejecting the vast riches meant to distract her, Ariane unlocks the only door forbidden to her. This single act of bravery and rebellion frees the other wives from their dreary imprisonment, and unlocks the chains on Bluebeard’s heart.
Based on a fairy tale, this opera by Maurice Maeterlinck and Paul Dukas is adapted for comics by P. Craig Russell. It is the third in a series adapted by Russell, following Pelleas and Melisande and Salome.
