Conan: Flame and the Fiend

Writer Roy Thomas (All-Star Squadron), who wrote much of the original run of Conan the Barbarian in the 1970s (or, to be accurate, adapted the Conan pulp tales for the comics page) returns to comics’ most popular sword-and-sorcery character with this 3-issue mini-series. Here, an older, wiser (but not yet King) Conan is leading a group of nomadic Kozaks when he saves the life of a harlot who bears grim news. She has been privy to the doings of a wizard known as Yezdigerd. His ultimate plan is to reassemble the bones of the demonic Kulan Gath, one of Conan’s oldest foes. In an effort to stop Kulan Gath’s unholy resurrection, Conan leaves his loyal Kozaks behind and embarks on a perilous journey through the storied lands of the Hyborean Age. Death and destruction will only follow in his wake—which of course is all the reason anyone needs to read a Conan comic. Thomas’s work on Conan is a tad rusty, but he can still tell a mean story, especially when aided by the artwork of the versatile Geof Isherwood (Spider-Man, Suicide Squad).
