Hoodoo
(3-D Zone, 1988)
™ and © 3-D Zone
This black-and-white collection of short stories by writer/artist Mary Fleener (Wimmen’s Comix) was inspired by Harlem Renaissance writer Zora Neale Hurston’s research into voodoo. Fleener explores the rituals of voodoo in the lead story “Hoodoo” and in the closing story “The Black Cat Bone” and adapts Hurston’s “Mules and Men”—a tale of vengeance—in comic book form in “Old Dave.” This is an intriguing collection by one of alternative comics’ most powerful voices.
