The Twilight Zone Premiere

    (Now, 1991)
™ and ©1991 CBS Entertainment

Now Comics ushered in a new era of Twilight Zones with this one-shot premiere series. It hit newsstands with a regular edition, a polybagged version, and a special “premiere” edition, making for a somewhat confusing start to the new era.

Luckily, the content was top notch. After an introduction by writer Harlan Ellison, the comic proceeded into the classic Ellison tale “Crazy as a Soup Sandwich.” There, a hapless gambler makes a deal with a demon to pick the winning horses at a racetrack, and backs his bet with a large loan from a local “businessman.” As promised, the chosen horses all crossed the finish line first, but for a variety of reasons were all disqualified. The gambler lost everything he bet, leaving a demon after his soul, and a loan shark after his body. In the prestige edition, readers are also treated to a second text story by Ellison, Darkness Upon the Face of the Deep.
