Sad Sack Army Life Parade

    (Harvey, 1963-1976)
©1971 Harvey Features Syndicate and George Baker

A “sad sack” is military slang for a pathetically inept soldier that constantly screws up despite the best intentions. That description crystallizes the essence of the Sad Sack strip, created by George Baker in 1942 at the beginning of U.S. involvement in World War II.

This title features all the mainstays of military comedy. There is the inept private, doomed to grunt work; the long suffering sergeant, whose Army career is in constant jeopardy due to the unfortunate presence of Sad Sack in his platoon; and the self-important general, who possesses the attitude and physical demeanor of Douglas MacArthur, complete with a long cigarette holder and sunglasses.
