Valiant Efforts (Vol. 1)

    (Valiant Comics, 1989)
™ and ©1989 Charles T. Whitley, Ralph E. Miley, Donald D. Ensign

This anthology super-hero series focuses on Christian beliefs and values, although the publishers promised that their intention was to entertain, not to evangelize. And though several of the characters do indeed fall into the expected stereotype of squeaky-clean do-gooders who preach their faith with every breath, others rationalize their moral fortitude with frequent violence that, though non-lethal, would still make the Punisher proud.

The cast includs the Golden Protector, whose faith is as powerful as his futuristic armor and weaponry, Dragonstrike, a diverse team whose primary adversary is the alien Huntmaster, and Street Fury, a trio of down-and-dirty African-American heroes whose war on crime focuses on the street trash that prey on the average citizen.

Although issue #2 promised at least three more installments, the series was hindered by sporadic publishing and non-existent print deadlines.
