Dragon Ball is one of the most significant manga creations to be released in the U.S. While its creative merits are debatable—the series is basically hyper-fast kung-fu action for kids—Dragon Ball took Japanese cartoons and comic books into the American mainstream, invading suburbia with its uncontrollable energy and video-game fight scenes. The series follows the life of martial artist Goku from his childhood to adulthood as he searches for seven magical Dragon Balls that, if all of them collected, will grant him one wish. Dragon Ball was spun off into Dragon Ball Z, detailing Goku’s grown-up years as the comic’s readers aged with him. Both are collected in this lengthy, 40-volume, English language reproduction of the original Japanese series.
