Comparisons to The Ugly Duckling are obvious, but there is a Cinderella in this love fantasy–comedy. Shy Reiichi is so short, fat, and ugly that everyone makes fun of him except kind–hearted Yumiko. But even Yumiko thinks he looks like her grotesque bulldog–pup, Mister. When Reiichi is almost killed saving Mister from being hit by a car, Mister (actually an enchanted prince) turns him into the most handsome high–schooler on Earth as a reward.

But it’s no happily–ever–after! Reiichi’s mother and bratty sisters still nag the shy boy. Whenever he tries to confess his love to Yumiko, he turns back into his ugly original body. Mister’s gratitude only goes so far: he is trying to regain his human body to become Yumiko’s boyfriend himself. Mister’s ancient wizardly rival, reincarnated as handsome schoolteacher Takamura, wouldn’t mind getting it on with Yumiko, too. Can Reiichi escape his mother’s and sisters’ psychological dominance (and elude all the schoolgirls chasing after his handsome bod) long enough to protect Yumiko from Mister’s and Prof. Takamura’s lechery? Ranma ½ fans will enjoy Duck Prince.
