‘Nuff Said is the result of a remarkable experiment. Joe Quesada, editor–in–chief of Marvel Comics, challenged the company’s writers to tell a story using visuals only, with no dialogue or captions. This trade paperback collects seven of those experiments. While the quality of the stories is mixed, the result of writers not having dialogue as a crutch is fascinating. Most writers play by the rules. However, in the Hulk and Spider-Man stories, they cheat a bit by having communications such as e–mail and instant messaging appear on computer screens. Grant Morrison’s X-Men contribution is the only one to feature dialogue, even if it is at the end of the story. Other characters getting the silent treatment include Thor, X-Force and the Punisher. Scripts are included at the end of each story for the reader to compare with the visuals. All in all, an intriguing look at writers and artists working without a net.
