Scary Tales
(Charlton, 1975-1984)
Charlton
This Charlton horror title lasted some 46 issues in a sporadic run between 1975 and 1984. In a way, it was the archetypical Charlton horror title, featuring the usual cast of monsters, murder, and the walking dead. These stories were generally well-plotted, ironic tales where evil always got its due. Steve Ditko illustrated many of the stories using his deceptively simple, slightly quirky artistic style to good effect.
Unfortunately, Scary Tales also epitomized much of what was wrong with Charlton at the time: uneven editorial direction, on-and-off publication schedules, and some of the worst printing quality in the business (the persistent rumor is that the printing equipment Charlton used had been formerly used to produce cereal boxes). Despite all this, Scary Tales was a worthwhile read for lovers of horror fiction.
