Mosquito

    (Top Shelf, 2005)
™ and © 2005 Dan James

When a man receives a mysterious letter containing pictures of victims of a vampire and a map to a small town, he packs his backpack with wooden stakes and says goodbye to his children. His determination is inspiring, but much more may be required.

In a medium where strangeness is de rigeur, Mosquito still stands out. The story is told entirely without words, save one: “sangre” which is Spanish for “blood.” Writer/artist Dan James uses 300 drawings to tell the tale of a South American vampire and the man who attempts to destroy him. The stylized art, simple, yet at times requiring a scrupulous effort to decipher, resembles woodcuts and is printed solely in red ink.
