Set in France in the early nineteenth century, The Drowned is a graphic novel by the husband-and-wife team of Laini Taylor and Jim Di Bartolo, and it’s a tale that is awash in gothic atmosphere and eerie turn after eerie turn. It is the tale of Theophile, who escapes from an insane asylum returns to his hometown on the western coast of France, where he confronts a horrific memory of an event that ruined his life and destroyed his family. Still, it’s more than a memory that haunts Theophile as he becomes involved in supernatural conspiracy to exact vengeance. This is beautiful, intriguing stuff from two newcomers to the comics field.
