Silverheels was a ’Pachee who grew up inside the Compound, a sort of reservation to which his people had been consigned by the Nazite rulers. Silverheels had a gift—he could outrun and outhunt any of his people. He also had his dreams—dreams which told him what was happening in the world above. Through his dreams he learned that the Nazites themselves were not gods. They had actually been forced to join an alien federation which they tried unsuccessfully to conquer.

Eventually, Silverheels found himself hunted by his own comrades who had grown jealous of his special abilities. He decided to risk death and try to escape to the outside world. Once free, he forced his way into a competition the aliens were holding to find a lawkeeper to represent Earth in their federation. Silverheels had sought a life beyond the compound—now he was striving for a life amongst the stars.
