JLA: Paradise Lost

    (DC, 1998)
™ and ©1998 DC Comics

Although devils and demons have long been featured in comics as either villains or tortured anti-heroes (Mephisto, Lucifer, Neron, Etrigan), their celestial counterparts were not so amply represented. But the popularity of angels in the popular culture of the 1990s engendered the introduction of just such a character.

In JLA #6 a guardian angel, Zauriel, fell in love with a mortal woman and renounced his immortality to be with her. Additionally, he discovered a plot by Asmodel, the head of the Bull Host, to succeed where Lucifer failed and to supplant God himself. The JLA intervened, thwarted Asmodel’s plans, saved Zauriel’s life, and offered him a spot in the league. This mini-series picks up at that point and finds Zauriel finally confronting the woman he loves. Asmodel’s ambitions, however, have not been squelched and Zauriel’s role in his humiliation will not be forgotten.
