The Book of Fate

Keith Giffen and Ron Wagner joined forces in 1997 to relaunch the hero Fate with this new series. Fate himself was a post-Zero Hour reincarnation of the classic hero Doctor Fate. Here, however, his origin is updated once again to give him more of an edge.

In this telling, Jared Stevens was a greedy tomb robber looking for a big score. Using an ancient map, he was seeking the relics of Doctor Fate located in the Tomb of Nabu. Although he’d charted its location precisely, he had found nothing, and was in the process of giving up and going home when he literally stumbled into the invisible entrance to the tomb. There, an ossified Kent Marsh waited, along with his mumbling mummy of a wife, Inza. When Stevens arrived, Marsh tricked him into touching the artifacts of Doctor Fate, which released Marsh and his wife from their imprisonment, but left Stevens as the tool (and battleground) of the Lords of Order and Chaos.
