Martha Washington Goes to War

    (Dark Horse, 1994-1995)
™ and ©1994 Frank Miller and Dave Gibbons

Frank Miller and Dave Gibbons’ Give Me Liberty was the powerful tale of a young black girl named Martha Washington, who somehow rose out of a life of despair to become a hero in the corporate wars of the next century. In all these situations, she triumphed merely by surviving.

Now, in this five-issue mini-series, Martha Washington goes back to war. Once again, she’s fighting for the Pax forces, this time in the second American Civil War. Like too many wars, this one is fought for trivialities. Here, the forces of Fat Boy Hamburgers have marshaled the beef-raising state of Texas into a bloody general war.

Grievously wounded in the battle for Texas, Martha finds herself placed in the tender care of the Surgeon General, whom she herself killed in the last series. Other friends, long thought dead, also reappeared, followed by a fear that the ghosts of the war dead had returned.
