Jingle Belle: The Mighty Elves (Paul Dini’s…)

    (Oni, 2001)
™ and ©2001 Dave Gibbons and Paul Dini

Well-known for his work on DC’s animated Batman and Superman cartoons and comics, Paul Dini shows a different side to his writing skills in this PG-13 rated, black-and-white humor book starring the eponymous Jingle, one of Santa’s more ornery children (who looks distinctly elven, by the way. So who is her mom? Mrs. Claus? An elf?). This one-shot follows a wacky, wild hockey season as Jing and her elf pals, Rosetta and Gretchen, get up to all sorts of mischief, from destroying an arctic military base to fighting polar bears and snow leopards to undoing the machinations of the vile Bliz Wiz—all to escape the boredom of summer at the North Pole. The art by J. Bone is busy but fun, and Dini’s language is wonderful and tart, without being too over-the-top. Older kids—girls especially—will love cooling off in a hammock some hot summer day with a book like this.
