The heyday of the Westerns was during the 1950s and ’60s when it seemed a generation of kids grew up playing Cisco Kid. Western comics were at their peak then, too, although they have since all but disappeared.

In the 1970s, Marvel reprised the Western comics of yesteryear with Western Gunfighters. This series reprinted the adventures of everyone from the Ghost Rider (the original Western hero, since renamed Night Rider) to Kid Colt Outlaw. However the most interesting hero of the lot was the Apache Kid. This hero spent most of his time dressed as your average sun-reddened cowpoke. But when trouble arose he would slip away to put on war paint and Indian garb, and change to speaking in pidgin-English. Then, after trouncing the bad guys he would change back, speak his normal, fluent English, and say that “the Apache Kid must have decked the bad guy—I didn’t see a thing.” Unbelievably, nobody suspected a thing!
