Lunch-Hour Comix
(Alternative, 2004)
™ and © 2004 Robert K. Ullman
The independent comic scene is rife with autobiographical comics, so it’s good to see one that’s actually worth reading come along. Robert Ullman’s premise is that each strip is drawn in one hour, hence the title, and gives a little slice of life. It’s not that dissimilar from James Kochalka’s Sketchbook Diaries, the most obvious comparison, though Ullman’s writing and linework, under the one–hour constraints, are much closer to Evan Dorkin when the latter switches from all–out cartoons to semi–seriousness. It’s fun reading, and pretty insightful, given how concise a format Ullman’s carved himself.
