Speed Tribes

™ and ©1998 Nemicron Comics

Kai, Kenji, and Rand were three typical teenagers in Kaminari City, a walled metropolis in the midst of a barren, scorched desert called the Madlands. They passed the time hanging out and longing to join the revered Speed Tribe, a cadre of “aercycle” riders with semiofficial status. But during the teenagers’ Bloodrun initiation, the Meklords appeared. These were deadly robots with programming to search and destroy and now they threatened Kai and his friends.

Kai disobeyed orders by shooting a Meklord, which triggered a massive explosion, killing his friends and making him an outlaw in Kaminari City. Now he must seek uncertain refuge outside the city walls among the denizens of the Madlands.

Based on a video game, Speed Tribes features intricate artwork, printed in transparent layers, allowing the background to be revealed through foreground elements. Unfortunately, the emphasis on the artistic aspect of this book is to the detriment of the story. The abundant use of computer-colorized gradients (especially in word balloons) makes discerning the narrative an onerous chore.
